I believe remembering is like traveling back in time
As young adults, we tend to latch on to our memories since we value each experience so much having lived not many years. Having physical evidence of memorable moments is one of the things I consider to be essential in my life.
Remembering about an event just by memory does not incite the same emotions as being reminded of that event by looking at an object. This object can be a picture, a pin, a flyer or even a rock. It is this emotional attachment to objects we tend to hold on to because it takes us back to that moment that made us smile.
I have a box where I keep many of these objects I like to look at when I'm feeling down. The magic of it is knowing what each of them means to you, and only to you. This is why I am only going to show you some pictures of what's inside this box but the experiences and emotions I'll be keeping to myself this time.

We all have to go back home someday
I wish to share my journey back to my house after visiting my boyfriend. I travel this distance almost every weekend and it is a total of approximately one hour and twenty minutes. This journey, no matter how long it takes, is absolutely worth it every time.
I start my journey in Rambla del Castell and walk towards Vilanova i la Geltru's train station where you can see Google Map's redish pin. |

This image of Rodalies shows the trip in a more direct path without the detailed twists and turns. |
It was interesting to find out there are about 48.5 km between Oriol and me now. I am now thankful that he is so close to me because when I lived in New Jersey there was an ocean dividing us and we had about 6189.385 km of distance which meant we could only see each other about twice a year. I hope you enjoy my ride.

Writting a letter to yourself
Years ago in the 6th grade my whole class had to write a letter to our future selves. This letter was meant for us to read when we graduated from high school to show us our growth, change and growing up process. When I read this letter a year back it really did make me cry because it brought so many memories but it also made me laugh because I wrote it as a kid and, of course, it had so many immature comments such as: "I'm sure you are now thin" because in 6th grade I was so fat. Anyway, this letter motivated me to write another one and experiment what it would be like if I could respond to myself. I really wish I was able to respond to my 6th grade self because I would love to give her so much advice and to tell her that life does get better.
As my new life in a new country and a new continent began, I decided I should write a letter to myself telling me what I was feeling at the moment and that I should reopen this letter a week after I wrote it so that I could compare my feelings at the beginning of the week with my feelings at the end of the week. This is an exercise I encourage you, readers of my blog, to do. Even though it sounds absolutely weird and sort of creepy, it actually makes you realise the attitude you have towards life in general. I, for example, realised I had a very negative attitude towards how things were coming out the day I wrote the letter and so.... I wrote a letter back... to me... I know I know, it's really weird, but hey! I enjoyed it so, whatever! Here they are:

My trip to...
Recently, I moved to Spain for various reasons, one of them being that my own country, Costa Rica, doesn't have the best education per-say. It doesn't have public transportation since it is considered to be a Third World country and, of course, because of it's humble area. The only public transportation "tico's use" are buses, one train and taxis. Other forms of transportation include bicycles, cars and two airports.
I've been in my relationship for three and a half years and two of them we did long-distance, which was a struggle for both of us but we made it through. One of the best experiences I've had the opportunity to encounter is the use of the subway and trains to go almost anywhere in Barcelona.
A few weeks ago I went to visit my boyfriend on my own and I wanted to share my experience getting there and some places as well as some of the customs in this time of the year in Spain.

These are some of the problems I've experienced on the subways since they are so old I've seen many construction sites since I moved here. As you can see, Catalan is the oficial language in Catalunya and that is why everything is in both Spanish and Catalan but I'm not going to get into detail about what Catalunya is and all the commotion going on about the independence they so much desire.
The train is leaving from platform 9. They announce the platform about 2-3 minutes before the train arrives. |
In Barcelona trains can be of one or two floors. ISN'T THIS AWESOME... Well not always. I really don't like sitting on the bottom floor because I feel a little claustrophobic but that's just me. |
Vilanova i la Geltru was the end of the ride. |
I ask my boyfriend why all the stores are closed and he explains to me that on Sundays stores close, all of them, only restaurants open and maybe very very few stores. This is because it is considered in all Europe to be the day designated to rest. All these stores in Costa Rica would be open but would probably close very early.
The picture on the right above this caption is known as a "churreria" or "xurreria" in catalan. This is a place where they sell churros which are long fried-dough sticks usually covered in sugar. I ask Oriol if they are popular and he tells me I should try them and so as we wait to be catered he tells me that the Spanish way to eat them is dipping them in hot chocolate. He also tells me that this is usually eaten as breakfast and not so much as an afternoon snack.
And this was Vilanova for you. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. |
